For making everything simple, we will always recommend using a WordPress plugin for Google Analytics integration. And in our list, MonsterInsights is the #1 Google Analytics plugin in the market. Thankfully, MonsterInsights is a freemium plugin.
The free version plugin is called MonsterInsights Lite, and it is available on the WordPress plugins repository. As you can see in the below image, MonsterInsights Lite is used on more than 2 million active WordPress blogs.
And just for checking the top-performing pages, traffic sources, the free version is excellent. Well, while you are running an online shop or business website, you might want to consider using the premium version plugin because it comes with unique features like author tracking, file download tracking, keyword tracking, etc.
In our MonsterInsights review, we have added more details about its features, pricing, etc. You can check it out.

How To Enable Custom Event Tracking In WordPress?
Now, let’s move to the tutorial.
The first thing you need to do is, buy the premium version of MonsterInsights WordPress plugin. With your Credit Card or PayPal account, you can purchase the plugin. Now, log in to your MonsterInsights account, download the premium version plugin to your computer.
Next, log in to your WordPress blog, install the premium version MonsteInsights plugin to your blog. Once you have installed it, activate it. Make sure that you have verified your license key so you will get updates and access to all their add-ons.
Now, we are good to move forward. The MonsterInsights plugin got a feature called Enhanced Link Attribution. So with this, we would be able to track every link in our blog. We might want to modify your link a little for enabling this feature.
Sadly, the visual editor won’t allow you to add a custom category, actions, etc. So, we will need to shift to the text editor for modifications. By default, when we add a link to our article, it would be like:
<a href="https://www.example.com/">Anchor Text Here</a>
What we need to do is, add data variables like a category, action, and label to the link. As I mentioned above, you will need to shift to the text editor for doing these modifications.
<a href="https://www.example.com" data-vars-ga-category="ABCD Category" data-vars-ga-action="ABCD Action" data-vars-ga-label="ABCD Label" >Example</a>
If you check the above code, you could see that we have added a category, action, and label to the HTML code.
After making these changes, save those.
MonsterInsights will take care of the tracking from now on. From the publisher reports section, you could see the precise reports.
Also, if you are using affiliate marketing as the monetization method, you will probably be relying on plugins like ThirstyAffiliates for link management. By following the same process, you will be able to track your affiliate links too.
NOTE: You don’t need to track every link on your WordPress blog this way. We recommend following the important ones and outbound links to see how a user interacts with those.
So this is how you can enable custom event tracking in WordPress with the help of MonsterInsights WordPress plugin.
